EEOC Reaches Record Settlement in AIDS Bias Case: The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reached a $1-million settlement in an AIDS discrimination case, its largest ever, while requiring a New York union to offer health insurance coverage to members who are HIV-positive. The settlement of the EEOC lawsuit against the Mason Tenders District Council requires that the union’s self-funded health plan cover AIDS as it does cancer, heart disease and other illnesses. Mason Tenders officials were not available for comment. The EEOC sued on behalf of 14 people, including 11 who have since died. The $1 million will be paid to the three people still living and to the deceased plaintiffs’ survivors.
