WHAT A GAL

There was an important omission in Jan Stuart’s excellent article “Emma Thompson, Sensibly” (Dec. 10).

After she did her bit as a stand-up comedian she went on to the West End in London to do leads in British musicals. She was splendid in “Me and My Gal” with Robert Lindsay. It was years later that I realized that she was the same Emma that I saw in “Remains of the Day” and “Howards End.” What a talent and a trouper!

Ms. Thompson doesn’t appear sufficiently “fiercely protective of her personal domain” if she allows Mr. Stuart to pound her collarbone within moments of her arrival at her hotel room after being “plied with a brimming plate of cookies.”
