EAST TIMOR: Genocide in Paradise by Matthew Jardine (Odonian Press: $6; 95 pp., paperback original). Matthew Jardine says that the Australian and U.S. governments, eager for access to Indonesia’s enormous markets and lured by the prospect of offshore oil reserves, have chosen to overlook human rights abuses on the island.
