Westside : Hearing Set on Plan for Golf Driving Range

Share

The Malibu City Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing Monday on a proposal to develop a golf driving range on seven acres of land.

So far, the driving range proposal has not gained support from Malibu’s Planning Commission, which considered the plan in September but rejected a conditional use permit for the project. If developed, the driving range would be near the city’s civic center.

The Planning Commission was concerned that the property, which is about 790 feet long, would not be deep enough to prevent balls from landing on roads and the undeveloped property that adjoins the site on three sides, said Joyce Parker, the city’s planning director. Another concern is that the driving range would require high fences, which would be an eyesore for tenants in an adjacent office building, she said.

The owner appealed the Planing Commission’s decision to the Malibu City Council. Approval from the council at Monday night’s meeting would reverse the decision.

Malibu has no driving ranges and only one private golf course, Parker said.
