BOMB AID: The Oklahoma City bombing killed 169 people, including some law enforcement officers. Santa Ana Patrolman Dick Zugman, whose wife’s aunt previously had worked in the federal building for years, collected $400 from co-workers. . . . Then he got the police union to match it, and delivered $800 to the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 123, Oklahoma. Says Zugman: The bombers “could have parked that truck in front of the Santa Ana Federal Building, or anywhere. I felt we had to do something.”

TIPTOP REMODELING: The highest building in Orange County just got a little bigger, thanks to a recent remodeling job. The county communications building at Santiago Peak is Orange County’s highest point, rising 5,600 feet above sea level. . . . Because of the building’s remote location in the Cleveland National Forest, workers needed extra time to complete the $350,000 project, which included expanding the building and upgrading its electrical system.

BIRD MAN: Veterinarian Scott Weldy is sad to see the county’s wilderness area shrinking. “Every year there are more McDonald’s and less land for the animals,” he says. “It’s like moving into a neighborhood without grocery stores. The competition for food is intense.” Weldy, who lectures for the Orange County Bird of Prey Center, will be accompanied by a great horned owl and a red-tailed hawk Tuesday at an Orange County Natural History Museum meeting at 27261 La Paz Road in Mission Viejo.

STARTING OVER: Children’s Hospital of Orange County has donated $2,500 worth of vouchers to the Orange County Probation Department to help former inmates get back on their feet. The vouchers are good at any of CHOC’s thrift stores. . . . Says Probation Department spokesman Rod Speer: “Yes, they have committed some kind of a criminal offense, but we are trying to get them back on the right path.”
