Silvio Berlusconi, the media magnate who won and lost the premiership in 1994, went on trial on corruption charges just as he attempts a political comeback. President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro is expected to interview Berlusconi on Friday as part of an ongoing search for a new premier after the resignation last week of Prime Minister Lamberto Dini. Berlusconi heads Italy’s center-right political coalition, and maintains that political opponents are behind charges that he bribed tax auditors.
