A 39-year-old U.S. Army sergeant assigned to help get U.S. troops and equipment into Bosnia-Herzegovina died Thursday of an apparent heart attack. He was the first American fatality in the Bosnian peacekeeping mission that began last month.

The victim was identified as Clement E. Southall Jr., a native of Virginia Beach, Va., and a member of the 191st Ordnance Battalion.

Emergency workers were called to his barracks late Wednesday night and tried to resuscitate him, according to an Army statement. He was pronounced dead early Thursday at a nearby hospital.
