Councilman Urges City Audit of $1.3 Million in Unpaid Fines

Share

Los Angeles City Council member Mike Feuer this week called for an audit of unpaid fines imposed by the Department of Building and Safety in an effort to recoup $3.6 million in penalties and sharpen the teeth of the city’s nuisance abatement ordinances.

Feuer said lax enforcement of the city’s regulations--regarding everything from leaving garbage on the street to exposed wires in apartments--has robbed city coffers of badly needed revenue and fostered a culture of disrespect of the ordinances among property owners.

His motion, introduced Tuesday, asks the city controller and administrative office to report back to the Public Safety Committee within a month on how to improve collection of fines for nuisance violations.
