New York, which slipped to the third most populated state in 1994, continued losing population last year as Texas, Florida and California posted big gains, the Census Bureau reported Friday.

The bureau’s annual state population estimate, delayed a month by the government shutdown, showed Texas was the fastest-growing state from July 1, 1994, to July 1, 1995. The Lone Star State added 311,000 residents to reach 18,724,000, maintaining the second place ranking it achieved in 1994.

New York, No. 3 at 18,136,000, showed a decline of 17,000 during the year, the report said.
