From Staff and Wire Reports

Cecil Mamiit of USC became the first freshman to win the title in the 14-year history of the Quadrax Future Champions tournament, defeating top-seeded senior Paul Robinson of Texas Christian, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, Sunday.

Mamiit earned a wild card into the $2.2 million Newsweek Champions Cup next month at the Hyatt Grand Champions resort, becoming the sixth consecutive USC player to earn that honor.

“I was pretty confident and relaxed,” he said. “I always wanted to press in and make the points quick. I always had opportunities to break, but I couldn’t come through until the end.”

The end for Robinson came in the eighth game of the third set. Down, 4-3, he dropped his serve with two double faults and then hit a poorly disguised drop shot that Mamiit converted into a break point.

The third-seeded team of Troy Budgen and Brad Scenery of Pepperdine defeated sixth-seeded Todd Nelson and Sven Salumaa, 7-5, 6-4, to win the doubles championship.
