Big Storm May Bring an Inch of Rainfall

Don’t expect the blizzard of ‘96, but a Pacific storm headed this way is shaping up to be the heaviest storm of the season thus far.

Due to arrive this afternoon, it promises to dump as much as an inch of rain in coastal areas of Ventura and southern Santa Barbara counties, with much more expected in mountain areas, according to the National Weather Service.

The heaviest periods of rainfall are expected to be from late Tuesday night to Wednesday afternoon. The storm is expected to last through Thursday.

According to a special weather statement dispatched from the Weather Service, flash floods are a possibility in southern Santa Barbara, Ventura and western Los Angeles counties. Residents are urged to keep tabs on weather reports as the storm develops.

Still, county officials say this week’s storm will bring far less rain than last year’s torrents.

“Oh good heavens, we set some records last year,” said Dolores Taylor, senior hydrologist for the Ventura County Flood Control District. “It’s not near as big--about half as big.”
