LOCAL MONEY: Camarillo State Hospital workers are passing out thousands of business card-sized notes to remind area merchants that much of the money they receive depends on the mental health facility staying open (B1). . . . “The idea is to demonstrate where that money is being earned,” says Elliot Brener, a psychologist at the facility.

TOWER TROUBLE: Folks in Ojai, still angry about a giant weather tower built on Sulphur Mountain, want the county supervisors’ support to block a proposed change to federal law that would end local control over the placement of cellular phone towers. . . . Supervisor Susan K. Lacey says fire officials worry that a misplaced tower could inadvertently contribute to a brush fire. “Everyone in Washington, D.C., is talking about turning back responsibility to the local governments, and we’re saying this is going in the wrong direction.”

DIFFERENT STROKES: Gary Coleman, star of the top-rated 1970s TV sitcom of the same name, is set to give a pep talk today to more than 300 young fans--the Thousand Oaks Bobby Sox girls softball league. . . . The actor-comedian, who turns 28 next week, was so busy working as an adolescent that he missed most youth activities, such as ballgames. “Such experiences were luxuries that came few and far between for Gary,” says his personal manager, Dion Mial. “Most kids don’t realize how special those things are.”

SHOWTIME: Magic Johnson’s expected return to the Lakers starting lineup tonight (C1) can only mean good things for his summer basketball camp in Thousand Oaks. . . . The four-day camp--the most popular summer event at Cal Lutheran University--quickly fills its approximately 450 spots every year. “It’s our biggest drawing card,” says Dennis Bryant, CLU director of summer conferences. “I guess we’ll sell out faster.”
