Funds Sought to Help Bury Slaying Victims
Family members of three people slain in Carson last week have issued a plea for help in covering burial expenses for the victims.
Alfred Evans, the uncle of victim Shanta Evans, said the families are about $4,500 short on the money needed to inter their loved ones at Inglewood Park Cemetery. Graveside services are scheduled today for Evans, 19; her 2-year-old daughter, De’Ajanae Morgan, and the infant’s grandmother, 69-year-old Hazel Petty.
They were gunned down shortly before dawn in their suburban Carson home Jan. 29, and Petty’s grandson, 21-year-old Leon Haney III, has been charged in the killings.
Investigators say Haney admitted to the killings shortly after his arrest, but during a court appearance Jan. 31, Haney denied any involvement.
A judge ordered Haney to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. He has been charged with four counts of murder because Evans was six months’ pregnant when she died. Contributions are being handled by Inglewood Park Cemetery, (310) 412-6529. . . .
