Elderly Active When Not Institutionalized
Americans over 70 who are not institutionalized remain active and productive, according to a new survey by University of Michigan researchers.
Of 900 elderly Americans between October 1993 and May 1994, 45% still grew and froze their own food. About 28% performed some home repairs and 56% did some yardwork.
The survey found that one-third reported doing some kind of volunteer work, while 42% helped others with transportation and 21% provided child care for others.
Those surveyed said the conditions most linked with their productivity were good vision, lack of pain and continence.
