Cuban defector Livan Hernandez pitched two scoreless innings in his debut as the Florida Marlins beat the University of Miami, 5-4, in the first game of spring training at Melbourne, Fla. Hernandez, who deserted Cuba’s national team, faced six batters, allowed one hit and struck out two. . . . San Francisco Giant outfielder Chris Singleton had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee to repair torn cartilage and is expected to be out four to six weeks. . . . Ryne Sandberg, who had two singles in a scrimmage Tuesday while trying to come back at age 36 after retiring in 1994, was conspicuously absent from the team’s intrasquad game. “I sent him home,” Cub Manager Jim Riggleman said. “He’s been working hard since October . . . I told him that there aren’t going to be too many days off over the next seven months.”
