Even a dry course will not produce exceptionally low scores, according to one participant.

“If the wind doesn’t kick up, I think you’ll see scores in the medium range,” Jim Dent said. “That gives you a chance to pass some people later on.”

Lee Elder is one competitor who probably would have skipped the event had it been played at Mesa Verde Country Club again this year.

Elder, 61, tries to play mostly in events that have a separate super-senior (over 60) division. The Toshiba Classic doesn’t have such a division. But Elder likes the course, which he has played several times over the years with friends, so much he came anyway.

“At Mesa Verde I had a lot of long irons into greens,” Elder said. “My length is average and here I will be able to hit shorter irons.”

When asked about the overall difficulty of the course, he said: “It depends on where they put the pins. They can make it comfortable or they can make it so you want to pull your hair out.”
