World IN BRIEF : SRI LANKA : 40 Soldiers Killed in Tamil Ambush

Separatist rebels ambushed army troops in the jungles of eastern Sri Lanka, killing 40 soldiers and wounding 13, the military said. The ambush occurred 130 miles east of the capital, Colombo, as the troops marched in advance of a supply convoy, officials said. The military estimated that 50 guerrillas were killed in the ensuing battle but couldn’t confirm the figure. The rebels are fighting for a homeland for minority Tamils.
