From Times Wire Reports

China warned that the United States will face “resolute opposition” from China if it allows recently reelected Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui to accept an invitation from Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.) to visit Washington. But Lee, in a written response to questions from the Wall Street Journal, said he has no plans to travel overseas “for quite a while” because he has a full agenda. Helms spoke of reissuing a long-standing invitation to Lee in a statement congratulating the Taiwanese people on Lee’s reelection. China considers Taiwan a renegade province.
