In its first posthumous award, the Kiwanis Club of Oxnard named slain Oxnard Police Officer James Rex Jensen Jr. Officer of the Year.

Jensen was killed by a fellow officer in an accident during a raid on an Oxnard condominium March 13.

Jensen, who was 30 at the time of his death, joined the Oxnard force in 1992, after a stint with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department. He was promoted to the Special Weapons and Tactics team in 1995.

Jensen was married and the father of two girls.

Every year, officers are nominated by their peers for this award, now in its 29th year. The other officers nominated were Edward Castruita, Humberto Jiminez, Ken Klopman, Eugene Rodriguez and Scott Swenson.

All the officers were honored at a luncheon Thursday at the Oxnard Radisson Suites Hotel.

“The Officer of the Year award always reflects the respect and feeling of an officer’s peers,” said Assistant Oxnard Police Chief Tom Cady. “For Jim to get this award is supported throughout the organization.”
