Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Third Top Police Official Steps Down

A third key member of New York City’s much-heralded police management team, credited with making record cuts in the crime rate, resigned in an ongoing shake-up in the nation’s largest police department. Police Deputy Commissioner Jack Maple said he would leave for a job in the private sector. Maple had been a close ally of Police Commissioner William Bratton, whom many believed was forced out by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani. Bratton announced last month that he will take a job with a private security firm.
