Synthetic Diamonds Used to Extend Life of Hip Replacements

Scottish doctors have produced synthetic diamonds with a new technique and used them in replacement hip joints that should last years longer than present replacements. Dr. Philip John of Heriot-Watt University said his team produced “sheets” of synthetic diamonds using plasma techniques and simple chemicals.

The diamond sheets were used to cover the ball in ball-and-socket hip joint replacements, providing protection and reducing wear, John told the Edinburgh International Science Festival. Hip replacements are one of the most common surgical operations in the West because the joint easily gets worn out or affected by arthritis.
