Shiite Muslim guerrillas attacked an Israeli army outpost in southern Lebanon with a rocket and machine guns Wednesday, killing an Israeli soldier and wounding at least two others.

Israeli artillery gunners retaliated for the attack on the outpost in the western sector of the Israeli-occupied border zone. One guerrilla was wounded in the shelling, Lebanese security sources said.

Guerrillas later targeted a position held by militiamen of the Israeli-allied South Lebanon Army with mortars and rockets, wounding one militia fighter, the sources said. The Iranian-backed group Hezbollah claimed responsibility for both attacks.

Four Israelis were wounded and evacuated by helicopter to northern Israel, where one died, Lebanese sources said. The Israeli military identified the slain soldier as a 20-year-old sergeant and said two other soldiers were wounded.

That raised the Israeli casualty toll in southern Lebanon this year to seven killed and at least 29 wounded.
