World IN BRIEF : CANADA : Quebec to Convene Kosher-Label Panel

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Quebec government officials who blocked supermarket sales in Montreal of some Passover kosher foods because of labeling that was in English rather than French agreed to work with the Canadian Jewish Congress to try to resolve the issue. In a move that outraged Montreal’s 100,000-member Jewish community, the provincial government’s Office of the French Language sought to stop distribution of American and Israeli-made kosher products imported for Passover. Authorities cited Quebec law requiring all products be labeled in French. A committee representing the language office and the Jewish Congress has 30 days to try to reach agreement on a way to prevent a similar controversy next year.
