Testifying for the first time about how he shot four young men on a subway in 1984, Bernhard H. Goetz said “that smile” and “that shine” in one of the youth’s eyes made him snap. He also acknowledged he had thought about using his keys to gouge out the wounded youth’s eyes. “I was trying to get as many of them as I could,” Goetz testified in a $50-million lawsuit filed by a paralyzed Darrell Cabey. Cabey, now 30, is said to have the brain capacity of an 8-year-old because of the shooting. The three other youths James Ramseur, Troy Canty and Barry Allen were jailed. Goetz’s critics claim he shot the men because they are black. Goetz denies race was a motive, saying they were bent on assaulting him.
