New Republic Editor to Leave Journal in May
Andrew Sullivan resigned as editor of the New Republic magazine Friday, saying he wanted to do more writing and start a “new phase” in his life.
The Washington Post reported that Sullivan told colleagues he is HIV positive.
But he said he has known he had the virus that causes AIDS for nearly three years and remains in good health, the paper reported. He said he is resigning because five years of editing the contentious magazine is enough.
“This is not stepping down because I’m sick and going away and dying,” he said.
No one has been named to succeed Sullivan, 32, who will step down at the end of May after five years with the weekly political journal.
He will continue to write for the New Republic as a senior editor and has agreed to write a second book for Alfred A. Knopf about friendship.
“Andrew invigorated the New Republic and gave it a cutting-edge voice that it hadn’t had before,” said Martin Peretz, editor in chief and chairman of the magazine.
