Nation IN BRIEF : PENNSYLVANIA : 4 Officers Sentenced for Robbing Pushers
Four rogue policemen were sentenced in Philadelphia for robbing drug dealers and falsifying police reports. Another was sentenced for roughing up a college student in an incident that led to the discovery of the thefts and cover-up. John Baird, the ringleader, received a 13-year federal prison sentence, the harshest meted out to the former officers. Thomas DeGovanni, a former sergeant, got seven years, James Ryan got six and Steven Brown received 10 for stealing $100,000 from drug dealers between 1988 and 1991. Former officer Thomas Ryan, who is not related to James Ryan, received a 10-month sentence.
