A power outage blacked out large areas of the Southwest, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without electricity and causing city traffic chaos. The outage, caused by a mechanical problem at a key power station in the West Texas town of Muleshoe, hit western Texas, eastern New Mexico, southwestern Kansas and communities in the Oklahoma Panhandle. Computers, machines, lights and electrical appliances clicked off in homes and businesses across the region about 10:20 a.m.
