More people are now eligible for housing rehabilitation loans.

The City Council this month loosened requirements for the program, intended to help low-income homeowners maintain their property.

Each year, city officials lend $500,000 of federal funds as deferred-payment loans to about 40 low-income families who want to paint, repair or improve their homes, said May Hui, assistant director of development services.

Previously, the families could not earn more than half of the county’s median income, which is nearly $60,000 for a family of four. Under the new guidelines, families can earn up to 65% of the median income.
