You Really Can’t Say Enough Good Things About Caen

Re “He’s the Heart of San Francisco” (March 28): As a daily reader of Herb Caen for nearly half a century, I found this profile misleading.

There is much more to Caen than the three dot punster and table-hopping gossip monger. He consistently takes liberal and humanitarian positions that are frequently opposed to the editorial policies of his own newspaper.

His attacks on capital punishment, the extreme religious right and the Visigoth wing of the GOP and his support of the First Amendment have been courageous and invariably cast in an exemplary literary style.

The San Francisco Bay area has been lucky to have him all these years.
