Police said Sunday that the Irish Republican Army did not appear to be responsible for the explosion of a small bomb outside a London bank.

“We’re keeping an open mind as to who might be responsible,” a Scotland Yard spokesman said.

The bomb went off in an alleyway near a Barclays Bank cash dispenser in a busy section of western London on Saturday afternoon, slightly injuring three people, police said.

One possibility under investigation was that the bomb was planted by an extortionist who has plagued Barclays Bank with 25 explosive devices over the past 16 months.

Suspicion initially fell on the IRA, which broke a 17-month cease-fire in February, but Scotland Yard said the device did not appear to bear the hallmarks of the group that is fighting to end British rule in Northern Ireland.
