Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : 7 Blacks in Line to Get Medal of Honor

Seven black World War II heroes are in line to get the Medal of Honor. Their names have been sent to President Clinton, who says the honors are long overdue. U.S. News & World Report says the combat records of the nominees met the standards of a special Army awards board. They are: 1st Lt. Vernon J. Baker, 76, of Idaho, the only one still alive; Staff Sgt. Edward A. Carter Jr. of Los Angeles; 1st Lt. Charles L. Thomas of Michigan; Pvt. George Watson of Alabama; 1st Lt. John R. Fox of Massachusetts; Pfc. Willy F. James Jr. of Kansas; and Staff Sgt. Ruben Rivers of Oklahoma.
