La Cubana’s Cuban sandwich deserves to be enshrined. The filling is thinly sliced ham, succulent lechon (roast pork) cut into equally thin slices, Swiss cheese, mustard, mayo and butter. The jacket is butter-grilled Cuban bread, a sweet, dense and rather dry version of a French baguette. Substitute sharp homemade pickles for the Swiss, and you’ve got medianoche, literally “midnight,” the perfect midnight snack.

La Cubana, 720 E. Colorado St., Glendale; (818) 243-4398. Sandwich Cubano, $4.
