World IN BRIEF : LIBERIA : New Fighting Sends Civilians Fleeing

From Times Wire Reports

Heavy fighting between rival factions sent chaos-weary civilians fleeing for shelter again and threatened a 10-day-old truce in the ransacked capital, Monrovia. Witnesses said the fighting was confined to the Barclay Training Center, an army complex that was the center of two weeks of warfare, burning and looting that began April 6 and ended with the April 19 cease-fire. Soon after the new fighting began, West African peacekeeping soldiers stationed throughout the city increased patrols of streets and beaches where fighters would be most likely to flee. It was not clear who started the fighting, nor was information on casualties available.
