Winemakers Seek Health Reference on Labels: Industry officials asked federal regulators to allow wine’s reputed beneficial aspects, as touted by recent studies, to be printed on bottle labels, along with the current warning. Since 1988, wine sold in the U.S. has had a label warning that alcoholic beverages may cause birth defects or health problems and impair motor skills. In the last eight years, however, several studies have shown that a glass or two of wine can help reduce the risk of heart disease and other ailments. Such research is reflected in the government’s “Dietary Guidelines for Americans” pamphlet put out to educate consumers about nutrition.
