A charitable women’s group recently awarded a $25,000 grant to the Tierra del Sol Foundation to add a performing arts program to the foundation’s services for people with disabilities.

“In one way or another, we believe this will benefit all our clients,” said Vicki Nadsady, community development officer of the Sunland-based foundation.

The private, nonprofit organization provides training and support services for more than 300 adults with mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy and other disabilities.

The grant came from SHARE Inc., an all-volunteer nonprofit women’s group, Nadsady said. The funds allow Tierra to increase the number of cultural activities and open up more performing arts programs to clients. The idea is to help disabled people develop creative interests and talents while building communication skills, physical coordination and self-confidence, Nadsady said.

Clients will participate in a variety of activities in the planning and staging of events. Some will perform in musicals and concerts; others will design sets, props and programs. Clients also will write, produce and perform plays, hold poetry readings and conduct creative writing, voice, acting and dance workshops.

“We’re hoping the programs won’t just entertain, but will make people aware of the kinds of experiences they’ve been through,” Nadsady said.

Eventually, foundation performers will hit the road, performing for local audiences and students.

“It can provide some role models for other, younger people who have disabilities,” she said.

Tierra performers will debut June 11 in Sunland during the organization’s 25th anniversary celebration.
