For the second year in a row, the city has been named a finalist in the All-America City Award competition, officials announced.

Westminster is one of 30 finalists chosen from 105 cities nationwide, and one of three finalists from California.

“It’s a big honor for us,” Mayor Charles V. Smith said Monday. “This is not just recognition for the city’s governing body, but for the entire community.”

The National Civic League of Denver chose Westminster for its success in reducing gang activity and sponsoring tutoring programs to help children with limited English skills.

The selection committee “tends to look at cities that have a diverse, multiethnic makeup, and how the community concerns itself with problems that might arise as a result of that multiethnic makeup,” Smith said.

Finalists in the competition will make presentations at the All-America City Award Jury Hearings, June 12-16 in Fort Worth, Texas. The winner will be named June 16 at a banquet in Fort Worth.

The award has been presented annually since 1949 by the nonprofit National Civic League, based in Denver.
