World IN BRIEF : GERMANY : Police, Anti-Nuclear Protesters Clash

More than 30 people were injured as riot police battled more than 3,000 protesters and cleared burning roadblocks for a truck bringing nuclear waste to a storage site in northeastern Germany. Police used truncheons, tear gas and water cannon to keep demonstrators at bay, while many protesters set wood and hay ablaze on the road and used slingshots to hurl rocks and bottles. The transport truck provided a focal point for foes of the government’s nuclear power program. About 15,000 police officers protected the shipment on its two-day trip through Germany from a reprocessing plant in France.
