Vintners Want Another Label: American wine makers have asked the federal government to let them add a bottle label, in addition to the required one warning of its dangers, saying drinking wine may have certain health benefits. The Wine Institute, representing vintners, proposed a label that would say: “To learn the health benefits of moderate wine consumption, write for the federal government’s ‘Dietary Guidelines for America.’ ” The guidelines, in addition to requiring a citation of the harmful effects of excessive drinking, say: “Current evidence suggests that moderate drinking is associated with a lower risk for coronary heart disease in some individuals.” Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms officials said they would review the proposal.
