In these election times of rehetoric versus rhetoric, I found “Recession Puts the Squeeze on Sweden’s Giving--and Ideals” (May 3) fascinating. We are told constantly that this countrygives more money in foreign sid than any other country, and that we should cut our spending. It’s obviously true in one sense, since we give more only because this country is larger than most.

In comparison, many countries (Sweden, Norway, Canada and others with equal or higher standards of living, are even more charitable as a percentage of GNP. This proves how important it is to be a critically thinking voter
