SLOVENIA : Pope Warns of Capitalism’s Woes
Pope John Paul II put “unbridled capitalism” on a par with communism, telling Slovenians on his first visit to the former Yugoslav republic that one is no less dangerous than the other. Addressing Roman Catholics in Ljubljana, he said Slovenia is trying to free itself “from the negative consequences of a totalitarian ideology. It must, however, remain especially vigilant to stop another ideology that is no less dangerous, that of unbridled capitalism, occupying the vacuum.” The Vatican was among the first states to recognize Slovenia’s independence from the former Yugoslav federation in 1991 before war erupted in neighboring Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
