SOUTH KOREA : Pilot Defects in MIG; Gunboats Cross Line
A North Korean MIG-19 fighter with a single pilot at the controls flew to South Korea in what officials described as a defection. Earlier, five North Korean gunboats intruded into South Korean waters and were chased away by Southern naval vessels, a Seoul Defense Ministry spokesman said. An interior ministry official said the MIG landed at a military base south of Seoul, prompting a security alert in the capital. Referring to the intrusion by North Korean vessels, the Defense Ministry spokesman said the move was a “dangerous provocation.”
