Clinton Gets Clean Bill of Health at Checkup
President Clinton, despite his reputation for eating, was surprised Friday to learn he was in better shape than he thought--weighing the same as last year and with a lower cholesterol level.
Clinton, who underwent his annual physical examination at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland the day after sharing a luncheon feast with German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, weighed in at 216 pounds--identical to last year. His total cholesterol level dropped from 203 last year to 191, which is considered within the normal range.
Dr E. Connie Mariano, a Navy internist who led the examination, issued a statement saying Clinton was “in excellent overall health” but said “we recommend he continue to watch his diet and follow his exercise regimen.”
White House Press Secretary Mike McCurry told reporters that Clinton “was surprised, as I think some of us were, that overall some of his test results improved somewhat from last year.”
On Thursday, Clinton shared a lunch with Kohl in Milwaukee that included barbecue chicken wings and short ribs, steak, lemon chicken, meatloaf, hash brown potatoes, mozzarella sticks and meatball soup.
