Beard Wins; Calvary, 11, Sets Record

The past, present and future of swimming were on display Sunday at the Speedo International Grand Challenge Swimming Invitational at the Heritage Park Aquatic Complex in Irvine.

U.S. Olympian Amanda Beard of the Irvine Novaquatics glided to an easy victory in the 200-meter breaststroke, finishing in 2 minutes 34.07 seconds.

The surprise of the day was 11-year-old Kristen Calvary of Novaquatics, who finished third in the championship final with a junior national time of 2:43.20.

“She’s very much like Amanda . . . very competitive,” Novaquatics Coach Dave Salo said.

Angie Wester-Krieg, who at 31 was the oldest participant in the meet, won the 100 freestyle (59.34) and the 200 butterfly (2:18.55) and finished with four gold medals for the three-day meet.

Victoria West of Redlands set a meet record in the 800 freestyle of 9:05.31. Jeff Julian of the Trojan Swim Club won the 200 butterfly, setting a meet record in 2:05.37. In the 100 freestyle, Polish Olympian Rafael Szukala won in 52.58.
