Honoring Jack Smith

The life and work of longtime Los Angeles Times columnist Jack Smith will be honored Saturday. “A Tribute to Jack Smith, Honoring His Memory” will include a dinner-dance and a silent auction from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Highland Cultural Center, 104 N. Avenue 56, in the foothills of Mount Washington. It will be hosted by honorary chairwoman Denny Smith, Smith’s widow.

Sponsored by the Friends of Mount Washington School, the event is planned to raise funds for the Jack Smith Multipurpose Building, which will house a cafeteria, an auditorium, library and computer space, and special meeting areas. A scale model of the building will be on display at the tribute.

Smith was a Mount Washington resident for more than 40 years, and often wrote about the community with affection.
