OLYMPIC UPDATE 49 DAYS TO THE GAMES : Quance Considers Teammate, Decides to Drop Lawsuit Over Disqualification

USC swimmer Kristine Quance, realizing any legal victory would come at the expense of Whitney Metzler, decided not to sue in federal court to compete in the 400-meter individual medley at the Olympics.

“I just have the feeling if we take this all the way, I wouldn’t feel good about the win,” said an emotional Quance on Thursday. “The only way I could swim the 400 IM is if Whitney doesn’t.”

Quance, 20, was disqualified at the Olympic trials for using an illegal stroke in making a turn during the 400 individual medley, and Allison Wagner and Metzler earned the two spots. Quance later qualified in two other events.
