Recovery workers at the Everglades crash site of ValuJet Flight 592 finally began using heavy equipment to dredge the muddy crater left by the May 11 disaster, workers said. Bad weather and problems in bringing equipment to the site delayed the start of digging. “We’re trying to pull debris from the crater,” said a National Transportation Safety Board official in Miami. “We’re still doing a walking search south of the crater.” The crash killed 110 people. Despite intensive searching since the disaster, less than half of the DC-9 has been recovered and the remains of only 24 victims have been positively identified.
