Adoption Guild Tennis Finals Today

Top-seeded Tim Pawsat and Adam Peterson advanced to the final of the open men’s doubles division at the Adoption Guild tennis tournament Saturday at Newport Beach Tennis Club.

Peterson, a senior at USC who played at Mater Dei, and Pawsat, a former Trojan, beat Jim Pugh and Gene Carswell, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, in a semifinal. They will play former UC Irvine standouts Mark Kaplan and Bruce Man Son Hing in the final at 1:30 p.m. today.

Pawsat also reached today’s 3 p.m. final in open mixed doubles with partner Jolene Watanabe. Pawsat and Watanabe advanced when former Corona del Mar standout Keri Phebus and Peterson withdrew. Phebus couldn’t play because of a foot ailment and also had to withdraw from the women’s doubles semifinal.

The women’s final--between Kathy May-Fritz and Julie Richardson and Gretchen Miller and Nicole Eliot--will be played at noon.

The Splash defeated the Seattle Sea Dogs, 9-1, in the opening game of the Continental Indoor Soccer League Challenge Cup at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

The Splash outscored the Sea Dogs, 7-0, in the second half. Paul McDonnell scored twice and Raffaele Ruotolo had a goal and three assists for the Splash.
