Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Hospitals Planning Layoffs, Report Says

Squeezed by Medicaid cuts and the rise of health maintenance organizations, at least 12 private hospitals are planning large-scale layoffs next month or are late in paying their bills, the New York Times reported. Hospitals intend to lay off 517 union workers on July 1, and other hospital employees will lose their jobs as well. Some hospitals have fallen thousands of dollars behind in paying health insurance for their employees and bills for services provided.
