A Natural Cool

Share

When you eat organic ice cream, all you have to worry about is the calories. At least, that’s the thinking behind this healthy cold stuff made by Cascadian Farm of Washington state. It’s made from organic dairy products. That means the cows were raised on organic feed in open pastures and not treated with antibiotics and synthetic growth hormones.

The flavorings--cocoa for fudge, peanuts for peanut butter and so forth--are said to be organic too. Only the stabilizers and emulsifiers are not. Even so, a company spokesman claims that the ice cream is 99% organic. Cappuccino, vanilla almond caramel, toffee chocolate swirl and chocolate almond fudge are some of the flavors.

We should say, however, that while tasters in The Times Test Kitchen found the ice cream good enough, they weren’t ready to give up the rich flavor of their favorite premium brands. You can find the new organic ice cream in natural foods stores.
