Going to Pieces

The good news is, not one of your friends getting married this summer has asked you to be a bridesmaid.

The bad? You now face a certain case of “I have nothing to wear” hysteria, exacerbated by overlapping guest lists.

Not to panic. To avoid repeats, simply invest in a garment that can anchor a series of special-occasion outfits. Something white (forget the old wedding taboo), like the fluid bias-cut skirt or pair of flared knit pants shown here, is a solid bet.

From there up, anything goes, as long as it’s versatile enough to carry its weight during the workweek: a poly-linen swing coat, a tank top and matching cardigan, a silk vest and jacket. Topped off with a hat, chunky necklace or printed scarf, these separates offer enough looks to get you through three weddings, two graduation parties, an anniversary celebration--and, God forbid, a funeral.
